Common Household Fixture Problems: When to DIY and When to Call Someone

Most homes accumulate a list of small fixture problems over time - a door that does not latch, a tap that drips, a blind that will not stay up. Some of these are easy to handle yourself. Others seem simple but often go sideways quickly. Here is a straightforward breakdown.

Safe to DIY With the Right Tools

Replacing a Doorknob or Handle

If the replacement is the same style and the fixing holes align, this is usually a screwdriver job. The main pitfall is stripping screws or buying a handle that does not match the existing door prep, so measure and match carefully before purchasing.

Tightening Loose Hinges

A door that drops or drags often just has loose hinge screws. Tightening them is quick. If the holes are stripped, a toothpick and wood glue in the hole before re-screwing usually fixes it permanently.

Mounting a Shelf or Bracket

If you can locate studs or use the right wall anchors for your wall type, bracket mounting is manageable. The risk is using the wrong anchor for the wall material. Plasterboard anchors fail in brick, and standard rawl plugs pull out of plasterboard under load.

Clearing a Slow Drain Cover

A slow basin or shower drain is often hair and soap buildup at the drain cover. If the issue is deeper in the pipework, connected to active plumbing, or keeps returning, it should be checked through the right trade pathway.

Better to Get Support

Tapware and Bathroom Fittings

Tapware support needs careful triage. If isolation valves are seized, connections are corroded, or the work connects to active plumbing, it may need a licensed plumber. Photos and product details help confirm the right pathway before booking.

Mounting a Heavy TV or Wall Unit

Heavy wall mounts require accurate stud location, the right hardware for your specific wall type, and correct torque to avoid pull-out under load. An incorrectly mounted TV can fall, particularly on hollow-core walls.

Installing Curtain Rods Across a Wide Span

A wide curtain rod above a window needs fixing into the wall at two or three points. Getting the brackets level, at the right height, and properly anchored takes longer than it looks, especially on plasterboard over brick.

Anything With Existing Wiring or Active Plumbing

If the fixture is connected to live electrical circuits or pressurised plumbing, this is licensed trade territory. Fitting a new light fixture, replacing an inline valve, or connecting to the mains water supply should be handled by the right licensed trade in Australia.

Grouping the Small Jobs

Most households have a backlog of small fixture jobs that individually do not justify a service call but collectively take a full afternoon to clear. Grouping these into a single visit makes sense. Send photos of each item so the scope, parts, and trade requirements can be checked.

ARY Property Maintenance handles suitable fixture, fitting, and repair support across Canberra and Queanbeyan for homes, rentals, and small commercial spaces. Regulated work is referred to licensed trades where required.
